The BARB system provides weekly monthly
and yearly statistics to what television programmes are the most watched
weekly. You can see what channels are most views and what specific programs. Each
program has a different audience due to them being about different things and
being completely different genres. The 3 television shows broadcast by the BBC
I will be doing an audience profile on and talking about their BARB statistics
are:
Eastenders
Eastenders has been a popular television
show for 30 years and its audience has grew u with the show. This means that
the show will still have to appeal to the audience who is getting older while
also still appealing to the new, younger viewers. It is a mainstream television
program which means that due to it not being niche it has a larger audience as
it is more appealing to the average person than let's say “blue planet” I would
say its audience ranges from the age of 12 to the age of 65. I say this as the actual
characters in the TV show are from many different backgrounds whether it be:
race, religion, class of people, health problems and social problems. Many
people in society can connect and link to these certain characters who all have
their own story line which results in a large audience. The BARB
lists Eastenders as the most watched program on BBC 1 of the week. I only lost
week 3 of April 2016 but when I looked at the other dates Eastenders was also
still the top result. Eastenders is broadcast at either 19:30 or 20:00 as that
is when most people are home from work and children are home from school so it
is ideal to keep the audience as they are free to watch the program as if it
was at 15:00 many people would be unable to watch it due to work or school. It
is the highest viewed program of the BBC weekly as Eastenders is now what BBC
is profoundly known for.
Waterloo road
Waterloo road has a
smaller audience range than that of Eastenders but does not mean that the
numbers of viewers are smaller. The audience for the programme are teenagers,
parents and even teachers. The situations the students get themselves in in the
programme and things what happen to them can relate to their own lives. Parents
can also use this show to have a visual representation of what goes on in their
child's school and what dangers to look out for. The barb statistics show that'll
2013 the show had 4.44 million viewers by the start of series 8 in 2012 but by
the start of the last series in 2015 it only had 0.71 million viewers. Which
could ultimately be the result of the show no longer being rescheduled for a
new series as it had lost its audience. This could be put down to the fact
smart phones take up much more of teenagers lives now so they no longer want to
watch the television they would rather use their phone instead.
Doctor who
Doctor who's
audience is children teenager’s adults and families. Its wide audience span is
the reason it has a high viewership and explains its broadcasting times.
According to the BARB statistics in 2005 the average viewing figures were at 7
million but now the most recent episode fell below the 4 million viewership
mark with just 3.7 million viewers. Some argue it is to do with the new actor
being older and not appealing as much to the younger generation but others
blame it on being a long running series which would always come into decline at
some point as many fans would watch a more mainstream programme now such as the
walking dead or the flash.
